In my book
Front Porch
Parables there is a parable entitled "Sky Bustin" I write about setting your
sights too high. That by taking aim at unobtainable goals can thwart your
sense of accomplishment, damage your sense of well being, and even take
the energy out of your attempts to achieve.
However, in addition to the above mentioned parable I found that for me
there was another form of sky busting. It was the the desire to be the
only game in town. I wanted to be the Lone Ranger with my trusty sidekick,
Becky.
When I would set my sights on a particular "ministry/endeavor" that seemed
promising, I would eventually find out that everyone and his uncle was
doing the same thing... or a form of it. Thus I would withdraw, hang up my
guns, and wait until another adventure would drop into my egotistical
brain that seemed to have the potential to place me on the top of the
heap. (From a psychological standpoint this
wanting-to-be-at-the-top-of-the-heap/Lone Ranger quest looked like it had
all the ingredients of a low self-esteem/low self-concept thing.) Then one
day after leaving a long trail of deflated balloons I realized, with God's
help, that I was not the only arrow in His quiver.
It all began to come to light after I began developing this website, Isaac's Well. This site is
intended to put into "black and white" a burning desire that I have had
for years; to help individuals to obtain their greatest potential. It is our
belief that God has placed within each human soul a unique destiny and that if
that destiny is allowed to manifest, an individual will be what God
intended them to be, thus advancing the Kingdom. This idea definitely fit
the Lone Ranger mold. This destiny-in-the-soul thing seemed like the idea
who's time had come and I had the revelation. However, as I began to watch
various programs on Christian television such as Paula White, T.D. Jakes,
Mark Chironna, and others I found to the chagrin of my ego that the word
had gotten out on this destiny thing. They were all talking about it.
Paula White had just finished a conference with fulfilling your destiny as
one of its main themes.
Pop! went another Lone Ranger balloon. However, on this occasion God
stepped in and made me understand that an archer is not going to attack
the enemy with his quiver containing only one arrow. He also made me
understand that the overall objective of the archer is to defeat the enemy
and that in most cases each arrow has a specific target to accomplish the
archer's task. Thus the more arrows in the quiver the better the outcome.
The one positive aspect of this is that if the big dogs on TV are barking
about it I must be on the right trail even if, as God said, "You ain't the
only arrow in the quiver".
